Areas, the Spanish catering operator specializing in service areas, airports and train stations, has been awarded a contract for 272 million dollars, an amount equivalent in euros at the current exchange rate, for the operation of three service areas on the motorway of West Virginia, in the USA.
It will do so for a period of 15 years, starting in 2023. According to the company, this highway has an annual traffic of 37 million vehicles, being one of the main highways on the East coast of the country. Areas will invest 15 million dollars in remodeling the spaces of the service stations, so that they have a “state-of-the-art design”. In them, it will open six restaurant spaces, with brands such as Starbucks, Wendy’s, Popeye’s or Firehouse Subs, along with three convenience stores under the Mountain State Market brand, developed by Areas for the contest.
This calculates that it will employ 132 people. “Winning the bid for the West Virginia service areas is a milestone for Areas. In just over a decade we have established ourselves as a benchmark player in the United States, the largest on-the-road restaurant market in the world,” he says. the CEO of the company, Óscar Vela. This emphasizes that “we are now the main roadside restaurant operator in the United States, managing the highway establishments with the highest volume of traffic throughout the country, and one of the consolidated leaders in the airport market”.
80% of Areas’ revenue already comes from outside Spain, and 14% in the US alone, its third largest market after France and Iberia. In the US, it manages 136 points of sale in nine airports and 10 service areas. “We will take advantage of all the opportunities that are presented to us to win new contests on highways, airports and train stations, both in the United States and in Latin America and Europe,” adds Vela.
