Beijing, Aug 12 (Sputnik) .- The United States’ fight against more than 1.4 billion Chinese will not end well, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned in a joint media interview published by the Foreign Ministry on Friday.

“Pelosi visited Taiwan, China, put together a political provocation and generated tensions in the Taiwan Strait (…) Failure to fulfill her commitments and deliberate provocation on the Taiwan issue can only further undermine the credibility of the United States. The fight against more than 1.4 billion Chinese will not end well in any way », he said.

He also pointed out that Beijing’s response to such a high-level US politician’s visit to Taiwan is justified, rational, necessary and appropriate.

“It is not China that is changing the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, but the US, which is trying to control China through Taiwan, as well as the island’s authorities, who indulge in unrealizable dreams and count on the United States in search of independence,” stressed Wang Yi.

According to the diplomat, the Asian country’s countermeasures are aimed precisely at maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait and regional stability. He also insisted that the principle of non-interference in internal affairs is the “golden rule” of interstate relations.

“The measures taken by China also uphold the basic norms of international relations and protect international justice and fairness,” Wang Yi stressed.

The situation around Taiwan worsened after the recent visit of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, despite protests from China.

The White House has distanced itself from Pelosi’s controversial trip to the rebel island, saying politics make its own decisions.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), in response to his visit, organized large-scale exercises using missiles, aircraft and warships.

The exercises began on August 4 in six areas around the island, and were supposed to end on August 7, but they dragged on.

Only on August 10 did the PLA Eastern Theater Command announce that it had successfully completed the tasks assigned as part of the military activities near Taiwan.

Links between Beijing and Taipei were severed in 1949 after forces from the nationalist Kuomintang party, led by Chiang Kai-shek, suffered a defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party of China and moved into Taiwan.

Relations between Taiwan and mainland China were restored only on a business and informal level in the late 1980s. The Chinese government’s basic policy towards Taiwan is peaceful reunification under the “one country, two systems” principle. (Sputnik)
