Nick Kyrgios defeated top-ranked and defending champion Daniil Medvedev 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 at the Montreal Open on Wednesday.

Australian Kyrgios, ranked 37th in the world rankings, won his seventh ATP title last week in Washington. The Russian Medvedev was crowned last week in Los Cabos, Mexico.

“Today I had a very clear objective of how I wanted to play, with a lot of serves and volleys, a very aggressive game from the baseline,” said Kyrgios. “I executed better than him and that’s what it all comes down to. He won the first set and I feel like I had chances too, so I hope to keep moving forward.”

Kyrgios is 3-1 against Medvedev and has won 14 of 15 matches. The loss came against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.

“This is the fourth matchup we’ve had and I’ve had some success against him in the past,” Kyrgios said. “But he has beaten me before. I feel like we know our game well. I’m not the kind of player that approaches matches by looking at the standings or anything like that, I just see who I’m up against and what kind of balls he throws at me”.

Earlier, American Tommy Paul edged second seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain 6-7 (4), 7-6 (7), 6-3.

Also, fourth seed Casper Ruud of Norway edged Slovakian Alex Molcan 7-6(3), 6-3 and eighth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland defeated Finn Emil Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6 -7 (4), 6-2.

Britain’s Cameron Norrie (9th) beat Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-1, 6-2, and Taylor Fritz (10th) beat compatriot Frances Tiafoe 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
