Lula to meet with US authorities interested in elections in Brazil

Brasilia, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Former president and candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has a meeting scheduled for today with United States authorities, interested in the elections in Brazil and future issues on the bilateral agenda such as the environment.

According to CNN Brasil television, the presidential standard-bearer of the Workers’ Party for the October 2 elections will speak with several representatives.

Among the Americans is the charge d’affaires of that legation, Douglas Koneff, the main authority of his Government in the South American giant, taking into account that the position of ambassador is not occupied.

CNN assured that the information was officially confirmed by the US Embassy and sources from Lula’s campaign.

In addition to the former labor leader, former Foreign Minister Celso Amorim and Senator Jacques Wagner should also participate.

The television station indicates that the meeting was treated with reserve by both sides, although it is supposed to have happened before. The plan is for the exchange of opinions to take place in São Paulo, at the headquarters of the Lula Institute.

However, the embassy informed CNN that “the dates of the meetings are not related to other events and depend exclusively on the availability of the candidates.”

According to the media, the idea of the Americans is to ensure support for the election result and address possible issues on a bilateral agenda, such as democracy and the environment, central issues for the US president, Joe Biden.

Opinion polls increasingly reinforce that Lula and the far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro will be the protagonists of the next election dispute.
