Shakira Says Spanish Tax Board Releases Obscene Campaign Against Her

Shakira says Spanish tax collectors “started to salivate” when they saw she was dating soccer star Gerard Pique, originally from Barcelona. And she says those authorities are dead wrong about $16 million she allegedly didn’t pay in taxes from 2012 to 2014.

The Colombian singer was accused of tax evasion Spain in 2018. Authorities said in July they would ask a court to sentence Shakira to eight years and two months in prison if she is convicted.

But she is not moving.

she told she in an interview published Wednesday that he had to fight the charges because the accusations are false. She says that she did not qualify as a resident of Spain during the years that she is accused of tax evasion.

“First of all, I wasn’t spending 183 days a year at the time. I was busy fulfilling my professional commitments around the world,” said Shakira.

“Second, I paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So, as of today, I owe them nothing. And finally, I was advised by one of the four largest specialist tax firms in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers, so I was sure I was doing things correctly and transparently from day one.”

Shakira said that the tax authorities were mounting a “press campaign” to apply pressure, as in the threat of reputational damage, in the hope of obtaining a settlement agreement. She accused them of tracking her whereabouts through social media once she started dating soccer player Pique in 2011.

“While Gerard and I were dating, I was on a world tour. I spent more than 240 days outside of Spain, so there was no way I would qualify as a resident,” he said.

“The Spanish tax authorities saw that I was dating a Spanish citizen and began to salivate. It is clear that they wanted to go after that money no matter what… They knew that I was not in Spain for the required time, that Spain was not my place of work or my source of income, but they still chased me, eyes on the reward”.

Shakira said she was confident that justice would prevail in her favor when the case goes to trial. “I have enough evidence.”

And if that’s not enough to handle, the singer has also been dealing with her high-profile relationship breakup, tabloid attention on her and her children, as well as her health issues.

“I have paparazzi camping out in front of my house 24/7,” she said. “And there’s nowhere I can hide from them with my kids, except my own house. normal family or go out for ice cream or do any activity without the paparazzi following us. So it’s hard.”

The relationship he had with Pique has been cheapened by the media, he said, which is very disappointing.

“It’s probably the darkest hour of my life,” Shakira said.
