UEFA today announced the names of the top three nominees for the award for UEFA Player of the Year 2021/22. The winner of the award will be announced at the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 25 August at the Haliç Congress Center in Istanbul.

At this same event, UEFA will also honor the coach who has had the greatest impact during the 2021/22 season with the award for UEFA Coach of the Year in men’s football.

UEFA Player of the Year

For the best player award, UEFA’s technical study group selected an initial list of 15 players based on their performance during the 2021/22 season at both club and national team level. The top three nominees were voted on by a jury made up of the coaches of the clubs that played in the group stage of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League. A group of journalists selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) also formed part of the jury.

Coaches and journalists were asked to select their top three players from the shortlist by awarding them five points, three points and one point respectively. The final result was based on the total number of votes cast by coaches and journalists. Coaches could not vote for players on their own team.

The three players who received the most points are, in alphabetical order:

Karim Benzema (France – Real Madrid CF)

Kevin DEBRUYNE (Belgium – Manchester City FC)

Thibaut Courtois (Belgium – Real Madrid CF)

UEFA Coach of the Year in men’s football

For the coaching award in men’s football, the UEFA technical study group provided an initial list of six coaches. As in the case of the players’ award, the three best nominees were voted on by a jury made up of the coaches of the clubs that played in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference.
