The vital detail that should never be forgotten when changing the windshield

The advanced systems driving assistance ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) are one of the further advances of the car in terms of safety. These devices are becoming more common and the European Union is making its implementation mandatory in stages.

in cars approved Since last July 6, it is mandatory to automatic braking emergency, assistant unintentional lane change, intelligent speed assistant, drowsiness, rear view camera and warning lights distractions and sleepiness.

The ADAS systems they need eyes let them see what happens around the car and collect that information to make a reliable recognition of the environment and act accordingly. those eyes are cameras and sensors, most of which are installed in the windshield.

When replacing a windshield, you have to disassemble the broken glass cameras and mount them on the new one. Once installed, these systems have to be recalibrated to ensure that they work with maximum precision and provide the right information.

The importance of recalibration

These systems have to follow working with precision throughout the useful life of the vehicle, because they can reach take control of the car, and because the driver trusts them and waits for their response to alert him of a risk situation or for them to intervene.

Among the proposals that International Automobile Federation (FIA) made to the European Parliament with the aim of maximizing the benefits of ADAS systems before their mandatory implementation is to “ensure transparent calibration processes for ADAS systems to maintain their effectiveness over time.”

And that is the cause more common why ADAS systems can malfunction is because their cameras and sensors have not been recalibrated when certain repairs require it, or that operation has been done in a wrong way.

That is why it is key that, after a accident or a broken windshield, the sensors of these systems are recalibrated so that they continue to offer correct information and the security systems can carry out a reliable recognition of the vehicle environment, for example, to detect other cars, pedestrians, signs, roads…

What happens if you don’t recalibrate or do it wrong?

ADAS systems can suffer serious failure of operation because its cameras and sensors have not been recalibrated, or that operation has been done in a wrong way, after replacing a windshield.

The Belron Group has been tested in the UK, by TRL, to assess the effects of miscalibration and has shown a performance degradation of the AEB automatic emergency braking system when the calibration of the windshield-mounted camera deviated from the manufacturer’s specifications.

For this test, Belron Technical designed a Test protocol similar to those of the static and dynamic tests of the Euro NCAP for the AEB system. In them, the tested car launched at 50 km/h against a static obstacle, with an overlap of 100%, minus 50% and plus 50%; and later, against a dynamic obstacle traveling at 20km/h in the same direction as the tested vehicle, with the same overlaps.

The tests carried out by the TRL show that when cameras fail due to bad recalibration, the car is not capable to perform a reliable reconnaissance of the environment and the security systems do not work, which can cause a collision or hit-and-run because the system does not calculate the distances or the necessary braking power well.

Why Carglass has the solution

Replacing a windshield is an operation increasingly complex. When a new one is installed, the cameras and sensors of the ADAS systems have to be recalibrated so that they offer accurate information to the security systems. This recalibration must be made by professionals with the appropriate training, experience, methodology, facilities and technology.

Carglass is the greatest expert in the recalibration of ADAS systems in Spain. It is the only automotive glass specialist that has the technology to recalibrate these driving assistance systems in 100% of the national territory.

In addition, the company’s constant commitment to technological innovation has converted to Carglass the only specialist capable of recalibrating practically 100% of the models on the market, even if they are recently launched.

The Carglass technical team has the proper training to perform accurate ADAS technology recalibration. Carglass has the facilities, instruments, technology and methodology to recalibrate correctly. In addition, it constantly invests in its technological update and services, with the incorporation of the latest technologies.

The Belron Group has carried out close to two million of recalibrations in 2021. In Spain, 16% of the cars whose windshields were replaced by Carglass needed to recalibrate the cameras of their ADAS systems, a percentage still far from 31% from Norway due to the greater age of the Spanish vehicle fleet.

That yes, as it assures Neill Rogers, CEO of Carglass Spain, “The difference is only in the speed curve of the implementation of these systems, because we know that in the future the 100% of the cars will equip them and their sensors will have to be recalibrated when changing a windshield.
