Sept 22 (Reuters) – The first sequel to the blockbuster movie “Avatar” will focus on the theme of family protection and expand the world of Pandora (CSE:) that enchanted audiences more than a decade ago, the film’s stars told Reuters.

James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Path of Water” is scheduled to hit theaters in December. Before, Walt Disney (NYSE:) Co will release a remastered version of the original 2009 film in theaters starting Friday.

The first “Avatar” movie centered around a battle over natural resources between human settlers and the blue Na’vi people on a moon called Pandora.

Actor Sam Worthington said “The Way of the Water” portrays his character, Jake Sully, and Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri as parents working to protect their family from harm.

“This love story has evolved,” Worthington said. “Now we have a family and, to be honest, for me the film is about protecting your family.”

“Whether it’s an immediate family, it works on many levels. It can be a community family, the family we choose,” he added.

The original “Avatar” movie is the highest-grossing movie of all time, with more than $2.8 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Four “Avatar” movies are planned through 2028.

When asked if he knew why Cameron was taking so long to make a sequel, Saldana said “it’s his process.”

“He’s a craftsman. He takes his time. He does his research,” he said.

Worthington said that Cameron wrote a script for “Avatar 1.5” to help him work out what he wanted to say in the second film.

“He is a man who cares about the story he tells and has spent much of his life telling it, sharing it with the world,” Worthington said.

He added that “El camino del agua” will be familiar to fans, but “it’s not a rehash of the same story.”
